Advanced Magnet Source Corporation

The AMSC bonded NdFeB magnet are all made of the patented NdFeB powders manufactured by Magnequench International.

Customer Representative of "SHANGHAI EPSON MAGNETICS CO., LTD." in U.S.

Production Process

Magnequench International powders are produced by a rapid solidification process known as melt spinning. In this patented process, an ingot of RE-Fe-B alloy is first melted, then the molten metal is ejected under pressure from a nozzle onto the surface of a water quenched rotating metal wheel. The material solidifies into a thin metal ribbon which is approximated 35mmm thick and 1-3 mm wide. By carefully controlling process variables such as the metal flow rate and speed of the rotating wheel, the quench rate can be controlled to achieve optimum magnetic properties.

The ribbon is collected and then milled into a platelet, or flake-shaped metal powder, which is heat treated to obtain the desired magnetic properties.

Applications

Bonded NdFeB (bonded neo) magnets has been incorporated into numerous end market applications. In 2005, the total bonded NdFeB magnet market volume was approximately 4000 tons which cover the following applications.

 - hard disk drive

 - optical disk drive motors

 - fax, copier and printer stepper motors

 - consumer electronics (personal video recorders & MP3 music players)

 - automotive & industrial applications (instrument panel motors and air bag sensors)

Bonded neo has also been used in the applications that require higher performance, smaller size, greater efficiencies. and reduced costs than which was achieved with ferrite magnets. These "ferrite replacement" applications include air conditioner fan motor, power tool motors, automotive seat motors and many others.
